Felix Humm’s ‘Chronicles’ stelae.

I got the idea of this project in 1996 after visiting the Louvre Museum in Paris with my little daughters.
In the souvenir shop in the Ancient Egyptian Art section there was a game of hieroglyph stamps, where each stamp represented a letter of our alphabet: with them the children could write secret messages to each other.
I bought the game and played with it myself and with the hieroglyphs I started composing news articles from various newspapers.
In this way these cryptographic stelae were born, hieroglyphs engraved on volcanic stone or slate, from which rice paper prints can be produced as well, using the Chinese technique called “stone rubbing”.

Thinking of the Chronicles Stelae.

In the Chronicles, the paradox is manifest:
a type of sacred writing such as the hieroglyphics of the ancient Egyptians (from hieròs, sacred; and glypho, carved), reserved for stelae, statues
or monuments conceived
as eternal in a dimension outside of time; they merge with chronicle articles (from chronikòs, concerning time), which are the exposition of facts, in temporal order, concluded and circumscribed within a finite and limited horizon. As if one morning, while opening a newspaper and flipping through to latest news, I was instantly struck by a meteorite.
